Shine Like the Sun

“The sun shines not on us but in us.”

—John Muir

Happy Summer Solstice!

Today marks the shift into summer here in the northern hemisphere. We have turned as close to the sun as we can get, and the apex of light ushers us into a season that is hot and heavy.

How do you sense summer’s arrival?

It is the fire of the sun that turns the flowers into fruit and showers us with an abundance of earth’s sensual delights—the scent of rose, the honey of  bee, the dripping juice of peach and plum, the warmth of sunbaked stones and the grace of cool waters.

The blossoms of our hearts are also coaxed open. And we offer our own radiance of joy as we receive the beauty of a world alive with buzzing, singing, sighing, and fruiting as she unfurls into summer fullness.

In what way might you open to beauty?

No matter where your people come from, your ancestors were sure to mark the summer solstice with celebration. The rhythms of earth are the rhythms of life and once upon a time your ancestors knew this. It is a truth you carry in your own blood and bones.

Do you remember?

To honor your earth-loving ancestors, to enter into the spiral dance of sun, to bow to the sacred breathing in all things—including you—I invite you to mark this longest day of the year (or shortest for those of you in the south) and remember your own wild belonging.

How might you enter the fire?

There are so many ways to celebrate the summer solstice, including my in-person Summer Solstice Ceremony tomorrow evening. If you are in the LA area, I’d love to see you there!

Here are a few other ideas. Follow your own longing:

  • Picnic with friends and savor a potluck meal together

  • Lay in the sunshine and bask in the heat

  • Make art, sing songs, or dance your own heart’s creative fire

  • Pick a bouquet of blossoms from your yard

  • Plant some seeds

  • Wander in the wild and witness how the land is responding to this shift

  • Go to the farmer’s market and feast on the bounty of color, taste, form

  • Watch the sunset

Solstice means the sun stands still.

So take a beat.

Feel the power of the sun outside you as well as the fire of your own heartbeat, the warmth of your breath, and the light of your inner flame.

You are radiant.

How does your body want to enter this season?

What does this threshold of summer ask you to step into?

The fire in me bows to the fire in you.
